Top Albums Of 2024 - Skylar’s Picks
we asked our music-lover friends to share their top albums of the year. here is skylar’s top 5 (in no particular order):
14 MINUTES — Dominic Fike
Such an experimental, fun surprise drop from him this year. Coming in at only 14 minutes I still somehow streamed the hell out of this mini album this summer in preparation to see him live. Even though each song is only a minute or two, they each have such a distinct sound and exist in their own little world. “bowie box” in under 2 minutes manages to render such an emotional reaction — a beautiful, brief, and honest song. I also love an entirely self-written album. “coast2coast” was a perfect summer beach rock track. Then you get a track like “1.23.23” that’s so groovy and vibey — a soft nostalgic look about a past relationship and good times.
MODEL — Wallows
Finally got to see this band perform live this year. Their energy on stage and in the crowd made me love this release even more. So many great guitar riffs — a really good indie rock record. I love Braeden’s scream-singing on the bridge of “Going Under” and “Your Apartment” was the perfect single to introduce the vibe and aesthetics of the album.
WHAT A DEVASTATING TURN OF EVENTS — Rachel Chinouriri
This was probably my favorite newer artist find of 2024. I connected with her honest lyrics, heartbreaks, and hopeful wants so much. “Never Need Me” and “The Hills” are some of my favorite songs of the year. The raw emotion behind them makes them the perfect nighttime drive songs to sing along to.
ESCAPER — Sarah Kinsley
Definitely my favorite debut album of 2024. It is so atmospheric and dreamy yet personal. An amazing album that really transports you from song to song. I’m not sure how many times I would put it on, only to realize I had listened through it front to back multiple times. “Realms” is my favorite song hands down. Such a cinematic look into the idea of alternate worlds and realities. Her vocals on the chorus are so ethereal and really add to the overall dreamy, otherworldly vibe of the album.
BIG IDEAS — Remi Wolf
This was the perfect summer album for me. She was my third top artist and it was mostly thanks to this July drop. I love LOVE “Soup” especially. Her voice is so powerful and raw. Great upbeat, punchy songs — so much fun to throw on when getting ready for the day.
