Top Albums Of 2024 - siick’s Picks

here are my picks for 2024 — this was hard.

10. HOW WE LOSE — Amie Blu

Amie Blu’s gentle but compelling vocals scratch something in my brain. With violin, guitar, and light drums scattered across the soundscape, the smooth balance of bedroom pop and R&B that she created found its way into my rotation repeatedly throughout the year and I can’t get enough of the transition between “who’s he gonna take home” and “my love”.

9. MIKA’S LAUNDRY Matt Champion

It’s sonically impressive, experimental, and distorted in all the right places. A vibing solo by the pool album. The features absolutely deliver without pulling from Matt Champion’s individuality. “Aphid” and “Slug” are two favorites, personally. There’s a range and immersiveness throughout that makes you feel like you’re living in each track.

8. ALLIGATOR BITES BACK Doechii

I listened to this album for the first time on a plane and struggled to maintain my excitement over each and every track. “DENIAL IS A RIVER” has been on repeat constantly — her cleverness and storytelling shine through each time. Doechii’s confident honesty is power. It’s the soul of this project.

7. BRAT - Charli XCX

Addictive, fun, edgy, and loud, brat summoned and uniting the unapologetic party girl in all of us, no matter what your definition of that may be. It monopolized the go-to girly pop pre-game playlists all summer long. This album was a step forward for women and feminism — not being dramatic.

6. CHROMAKOPIA - Tyler, The Creator

A whole, transportive production. “Like Him” is cinema for your ears, and “Balloon” is sensational. I don’t have many other words for this album, the talent speaks for itself.

5. CHARM - Clairo

A love spell. Clairo’s gentleness is hypnotic. This project is whimsical and lively while still exploring relatable themes of loneliness and the desire to close the distance between one another. “Pier 4” is overwhelmingly hard-hitting, but I’d need more time and space to properly dive into that one.

4. GOD SAID NO — Omar Apollo

Ohhhhhh girl. I think this is my favorite piece of work that Miss Claire has released. It feels whimsical, folky, dreamy, and just like it was always supposed to exist. Listening to this album feels like you’re floating the entire way through.

3. THIS IS HOW TOMORROW MOVES - beabadoobee

“Beaches” is a dreamy soundtrack for the train ride home, and “This Is How It Went it went” is addictive and painfully real. Her music is a hug from your long-distance best friend. It’s the validation of the lover girl experience in a world that teaches women to push down their feelings to be taken seriously. I couldn’t stop listening.

2. TWO STAR & THE DREAM POLICE — Mk.gee

I didn’t know who this guy was a year ago, and now I have to restrain myself from bringing his music up in every conversation. — I hope that explains the impact of this album. The explorative, indie soundscape of “Alesis” is a daily craving, and the overall experimental feel of the project is captivating to a point that’s difficult to describe. It evokes a sensation — you want to immerse yourself in it over and over again, hoping it will inspire a self-revelation or two.

1. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT — Billie Eilish

This is Billie & Finneas’ best and most mesmerizing work yet. With a vast range in pace and intention, the project mimics the way life truly does hit you, hard and soft. It strips back the blinders of adolescence with a new-found confidence for dealing with experiences that once seemed impossible to overcome. It’s 43 minutes of gold and satisfaction.
